The St. Lawrence County Seat

Miner Street Trail Connector and Willow Island Park Enhancements

The Town and Village of Canton are working together to implement the Canton Grasse River Waterfront Revitalization Plan and the Canton Master Trail Plan, funded through previous Environmental Protection Fund (EPF) Local Waterfront Revitalization Plan (LWRP) awards, by enhancing Willow Island along the Grasse River and widening Miner Street Road. This project will be completed in two components:

Component 1:

The Willow Island Project (WIP) will enhance the public park on Willow Island in downtown Canton. This project may include the addition of a performance space, a play area, restroom facilities, accessible walkways and landscaping. The project is a collaboration of the Village of Canton and a local non-profit, Grasse River Heritage (GRH). Match funding for the WIP is provided by the Village of Canton.

The Village has created an advisory committee for this portion of the project, and has hired a consultant – Whitham Planning Design Landscape Architecture, PLLC – to work through the designing of this space. Please see the links below for more information regarding the status of the project.

Component 2:

The Miner Street Trail Connector (MSTC) will provide safer non-motorized travel along a heavily trafficked route into and out of the Village and access from the Village to Taylor Park, Canton’s beach and recreation area on the Grasse River. On-road paved pedestrian and cycling lanes with painted delineations on both side of the road running from the Miner Street bridge to the entrance to Taylor Park (.8 miles) will make it a safer route for both motorized and non-motorized traffic. This will allow for increased non-motorized access to Taylor Park. Match funding for the MSTC is provided by the Town of Canton.

The Town has hired an architect – Brooks Washburn Architect, PC – to work on the development of this portion of the project. Please see the links below for more information regarding the status of the project.

The Town has accepted a bid and entered into a contract to begin work on the grading and drainage for Miner Street (Phase 2). Work is expected to begin in the Fall of 2023.
