Birth & Death Certificates:
Birth and Death Certificates are on file in the Town Clerk’s office.
For certified copies, an application is needed.
Mail or bring completed form to the Town Clerk’s office with a check. Please call the Town Clerk’s office with any questions you may have.
The cost for a certified birth or death record is $10.00. We accept cash, check, or credit card. If you are mailing your application for a record, please include a check for $10.00 made payable to the Town of Canton, or you can make a payment on-line. We are also available Monday – Friday, 8am – 4pm, if you’d like to stop in and pay in the office and pick up your birth or death record.
Application for building permit
Building Permit Applications MUST be submitted prior to commencement of work. Upon issuance of permit, the applicant must contact the Code Enforcement Officer upon completion of each stage of work and for final inspection.
A permit is valid for 12 months and must be renewed if the work is not completed within that time.
Applications for residential structures over 1500 sq. ft. and all commercial projects require New York State engineered drawings.

Dog Licenses & Renewals:
Dogs four months of age and older MUST be licensed according to NYS Law.
Fees for a 1- year license:
**Current rabies certificate is required to process a dog license or renewal. This certificate should include the date of the vaccination, the vaccinatiion manufacturer, vaccination serial number, and the rabies tag number.**
If you’d like to register your dog or renew your dog’s license from home, you can pay on-line and fax (315-386-4881) or email (email@example.com) the rabies certificate. Please call the Town Clerk’s office with any questions you may have.

Handicap Parking Permits:
Issued at the Police station located in the Municipal Building. Hangers issued with application signed by doctor.
Marriage Licenses & Marriage Certificates:
Must be purchased at least 24 hours before marriage, and can be purchased up to 60 days in advance.
If you are requesting a copy of a marriage certificate, please send this completed form to the Town Clerk’s office with a check. The marriage certificate will be mailed back to you unless you’d like to make an appointment to pick it up. Please call the Town Clerk’s office with any questions you may have.
The cost for a certified marriage certificate is $10.00. We accept cash, check, or credit card. If you are mailing your completed form, please include a check for $10.00 made payable to the Town of Canton, or you can make a payment on-line. We are also available Monday – Friday, 8am – 4pm, if you’d like to stop in and pay in the office and pick up your marriage certificate.
All DEC approved hunting and fishing licenses can be purchased at the Town Clerk’s Office. We accept cash, check, or credit card payments for hunting and fishing licenses.
Canton Central School Tax Bills are mailed out August 31st and payable through the Town Clerk’s Office by 9/30/2021 (payment in full) or 11/30/2021 (installment payments).
- Mail your payment.
Mail your check with your payment stub to: Town of Canton Tax Collector, 60 Main Street, Canton, NY 13617. If you want a receipt mailed to you, please be sure to mark the box on the payment stub indicating that you want a receipt mailed to you.
- Drop off your payment.
Drop your payment off with your payment stub in person or in the locked, secure drop box in the entry way of the Municipal Building (in a sealed envelope). This drop box is hanging on the left side as you walk into the entry way – it is white, and labeled with a green piece of paper. This box is check daily. If you want a receipt, please be sure to mark the box on the payment stub indicating that you want a receipt mailed to you.
- Pay your tax bill on-line.
Visit this link, look up you tax bill, and then click on the “proceed to payment” button. This year’s tax information will be available on this site on 9/1/2021.
