Recreation Hiring for Summer Positions

April 4, 2018

It’s hard to believe, but summer is just around the corner!  The Canton Recreation Department is gearing up for summer programs and looking for responsible, enthusiastic applicants to lead and assist summer programs.

This summer there will be nearly twenty programs offered for all ages and interests.  The popular Adventures in Learning program has undergone some exciting changes.  The program, now titled Summer Adventures: Feedings Kids’ Minds & Bodies, will be a 6-week program, running Monday through Friday from 9am to 3pm out at Taylor Park.  Each week will follow a health theme, from healthy eating and healthy bodies to healthy environment and healthy community.  Partnering organizations including GardenShare, Nature Up North, Grasse River Heritage, the Canton Central Teachers’ Association, and others will provide activities to enhance each week’s theme.  A bus route will provide transportation for participants to and from Taylor Park and GardenShare will provide a free lunch each day utilizing fresh and local ingredients.  For this program, applicants are encouraged to apply for the Program Leader position or for one of three Counselor positions.

Additionally, applications are available for lifeguards interested in working at Taylor Park.  There are many open positions from regularly scheduled guards to lifeguard substitutes.  Applicants must be at least 16 years old and must hold a current Lifeguarding/First Aid certification, CPR/AED certification, and Waterfront Skills certification.  Applicants will also be required to attend a practical skills test at the CCS pool on Saturday, May 12 at 3pm.

The Recreation Department is excited to offer two new programs this summer as well.  There will be a Paddling Clinic, during which participants will learn kayaking and canoeing skills and techniques in addition to basic boating safety.  Experienced paddlers are invited to apply for the Paddling Clinic Leader position.  Additionally, there will be a Speed & Conditioning Clinic, during which teenagers will improve their running form and efficiency and learn basic training program development to help them succeed in their sport or hobby.  Applicants for the Speed & Conditioning Clinic Leader should be knowledgeable of the biomechanics of running and familiar with leading drills and developing training plans.

Other programs seeking program leaders and assistants include the Tumbling Clinic, Jr. Golf Clinic, Beginning Tennis Clinic, and Theater Program.  All summer position applications are due Monday, April 9 by 4pm.  Applications, including full job descriptions, can be found on the Parks & Recreation page – www.cantonny.gov/community/parks-recreation
