Village Hosts Information Sessions on Renewable Power Option

May 20, 2022

The Village of Canton Board of Trustees and Sustainability Committee are working with Joule Community Power to explore Community Choice Aggregation (CCA), a program that would allow the Village to offer residents and small businesses the benefits of renewable electricity supply. Two virtual information sessions will be held on Wednesday, June 1, and Thursday, June 16, both at 6pm. The Village Board encourages public participation and is interested in hearing residents’ thoughts and questions. The links for the sessions can be found at joulecommunitypower.com/events or by calling (888) 985-2211.

Formed in partnership with Joule Community Power, a division of Joule Assets, Inc., the Village of Canton Community Power CCA program would allow the municipality to pool local electricity demand to leverage the collective buying power of their residents and small businesses. This would allow the Village to secure more favorable terms on their energy supply and choose renewable generation sources.

The Village would participate in a bid process for a CCA electricity supply rate. If the rates are favorable and the program benefits Village residents, an electricity supplier would be selected and eligible residents and businesses would receive information about the program, their choices, and information about how to opt out.

The public information sessions are scheduled to help residents make informed decisions about this program. These sessions will provide general information, explain the benefits of participation by Village residents and small businesses, and answer any questions.

Future in-person information meetings will be held for those who cannot or prefer not to participate in an online format.

About Joule Community Power: Joule Community Power (Joule) is committed to developing a clean energy future for all. Through their comprehensive portfolio of community choice aggregation and sustainability services, Joule ensures the at-scale uptake and deployment of new clean energy resources, enabling municipalities to deliver on their sustainability objectives. Joule’s programs empower municipalities to make energy decisions for their own communities, thereby enabling local decision-making and empowerment. In doing so, Joule is shifting New York State’s energy dependency from a utility-controlled, fossil fuel model to a municipally controlled clean, renewable energy model for thousands of households at a time. As a first mover, in 2021, Joule launched the first and only opt-out community solar program in the U.S., bringing the benefits of solar—including guaranteed electricity bill savings—to entire communities. As of today, Joule represents over 800,000 New Yorkers in over 45 municipalities. Additionally, Joule enables consumers and institutions to take action and benefit from New York State’s ongoing investment in sustainability initiatives.
