Canton 2018 Winterfest Olympics

 The 2018 Canton Winterfest Olympics, cosponsored by the Canton Recreation Department and Nature Up North, will include three public events on the weekend of Friday, February 9  through Sunday, February 11, as part of Canton’s Winterfest celebration. Registration is free, and participants may enter in just one or all three events.

EVENT 1 – Cardboard Sled Race
3-5pm Friday, February 9
The Canton Pavilion

Races will begin promptly at 4pm at Bend in the River Park. Teams of 2-4 are invited to build a sled in advance or come early for sled building from 3-4pm in the Community Room on the day of the race, materials will be provided. Sleds must be able to carry one team member. Teams will compete in one of the following divisions, Youth (12 & under), Open, Family, or College (students only). Approved sled-building materials include: cardboard, duct tape, recycled plastic bags, paint, and glue (materials provided at event for those that come early to build). Sleds judged for speed as well as creativity, with points awarded to teams winning their division.

EVENT 2 – Snow Sculpture Competition
2-3pm Saturday, February 10
Bend in the River Park

 Teams of two to four will have 45 minutes to create a snow sculpture out of a provided pile of snow in Bend in the River Park. Teams will be judged in one of the following divisions, Youth (12 & under), Open, Family, or College (students only). Sculptures will be judged and points awarded to teams winning their division along with several other categories.

EVENT 3 – Cross Country Ski Race
10am Sunday, February 11
Best Western Club House

The Cross Country Ski Race will be the final and culminating event of the 2018 Winter Olympics! Participants of all ages, skill, and experience levels are encouraged to participate. Youth (12 & under) Division participants will ski a 0.5-mile loop, while Open & College (students) will complete the loop twice, for a 1-mile race. Points awarded to race winners in each division along with several other awards, including those for beginners. Loaner skis and boots will be available curtesy of CCS for those who do not have their own equipment. Those who would like to borrow equipment must pre-register and provide the skier’s height and boot size.

Participants from all events are invited to our final awards ceremony and prize raffle at the Best Western Club House on Sunday, February 11 immediately following the ski races (~11 am). There will be a prize raffle for a chance to win one of many local prizes and giveaways from our generous sponsors. All Winter Olympic participants will be given one raffle entry ticket for each event they compete in. Winners must be present at the raffle to receive a prize.

Points:
For each event, winners in each division will receive top points and all participants will receive points towards their overall Winter Olympics score. The three individuals with the highest scores overall will receive awards for the Winter Olympics.

Registration:
Day-of registration is available at each event. To pre-register, please contact the Canton Recreation Department by Tuesday, February 6th at [email protected] and provide the following information: which event(s) you are registering for, participant name(s), participant age(s) and division. Skiers, please provide your height and boot size if you would like to borrow equipment. Individuals may register for all 3 events, and may participate on different teams for events 1 and 2.
