Rec Department Rolls Out Summer Programs

With most COVID restrictions lifted just as summer swings into full gear, the Canton Recreation Department is working with the newly formed Recreation Advisory Committee to assemble a limited but assorted menu of summer program offerings in July and August.

Details are still being worked out for the following:

Safety, Fitness, Martial Arts – Frank Palumbo, Thursdays 6-7pm, Bend in the River Park, 2 months/$65 (Includes attending any area classes (Mon – Gouverneur; Tues – Norwood; Weds – Heuvelton; Fri. -Canton).

Fitness Training – Len Mackey, Monday/Wednesday, July 5 to August 4, 7-8am, Animal Forms and Agility Interval Training, 8-9am, Yoga and Joint Mobility; Bend in the River Park, $50 for five classes, $95 for all ten. Minimum of five students required.

Bicycle Safety – Canton Police officer Ashley Coffey and SLU Safety & Security bike patrol officers, Wednesdays, July 14 and 28, 9 -11 am, Canton Pavilion. Free for children of all ages.

Beginning Tennis Clinic – Carla Wentworth, Tuesday, July 20 to Friday, July 23, 6-7pm, location TBD. $15 or $5/class. Ages 4 and up; families welcome; rackets available to borrow.

Introduction to Dance – Abby Metcalf, Monday, July 26 to Thursday, July 29, 6-7pm, Riley Community Room, Canton Pavilion. $15. Ages 6 to 9; basic instruction in ballet and jazz; no prior experience or special shoes required.

Wheelchair Lacrosse – Mark McKenna, weekend(s) in late August

Someone from the Recreation Department or the program instructor will contact you with up-to-date details. Completing this registration form does not obligate you to participate in a program if the final arrangements aren’t convenient.

The Canton Recreation Department is a shared service of the Village and the Town. The search for a new Recreation Director is ongoing; an announcement is expected in the next couple of weeks. In the meantime, the Village and Town appreciate the efforts of the Recreation Advisory Committee to support the development of these summer programs.
