Canton Sustainability Committee Seeks New Members

October 10, 2018

The Canton Sustainability Committee is looking for new members.

The joint Village and Town committee advises and assists with implementation of Canton’s Community Action Plan and supports initiatives that promote sustainability and environmentally sound municipal decision making. Several of the committee’s active members recently moved away and new hands are needed.

Committee members typically reside or work in the Town and Village. The real qualification is that members have a commitment to a healthy environment and willingness to work with others to that end. Students are welcome.

According to Village Trustee Carol Pynchon, “Canton’s Sustainability Committee is a great place to share ideas and get involved in making Canton a better, healthier, more sustainable place to live.”

The Sustainability Committee addresses issues related to food, energy, housing, transportation, waste, climate change and natural resource issues. The committee hosted the Local Food, Local Places multi-day workshop and is exploring opportunities for community composting. They launched the very successful Solarize Canton campaign that resulted in nearly 40 new solar homes and spearheaded actions leading to statewide recognition as a Clean Energy Community, a Climate Smart Community, and a Complete Streets community. As a result of their work, funds have been raised for important infrastructure improvements, including replacement of the old and inefficient blowers at the wastewater treatment plant.

Current committee focuses are on reduction of plastic waste and recycling of food waste, pedestrian and cyclist safety, and continued exploration of energy-saving measures. New York State is offering funding to municipalities to address environmental issues; what the Sustainability Committee needs now is people to help develop and implement these essential projects.

Sustainability Committee meetings are held the second Tuesday of the month at 5 pm in the Municipal Building (60 Main Streed) board room. The next meeting is scheduled for this Tuesday, November 13, at 5. All are welcome
